If there is one thing that has enabled me to pursue 5 academic degrees, start a business, travel the polar regions, and become a Cambridge researcher, it's mindset. Without it, I would not be where I am today.
Â
Your mindset is never 'done'. As you level up in life, your mindset needs to level up with you. Or else you'll get stuck and hit a plateau.
Â
This is exactly why I continue to invest in coaching myself. I want to keep tweaking my mindset, so I can keep growing. At the moment, I even have two coaches! One to keep me accountable, and one to help me improve my communication.
Â
Today, I had a 1-1 with the latter coach. I've been working with her on my elevator pitch. And boy, did I encounter some mindset blocks! Here they are:
My 'elevator pitch' mindset blocks
Â
1. I have a multi-path career. I fear people will think that being a 'jack-of-all-trades' means that I'm a 'master of none'.
Â
2. I feel conflicted about telling people I only coach gifted individuals, because I fear they'll see my coaching as elitist (let's be honest, giftedness stigma is alive and kicking). Plus, I'm scared of alienating potential clients who might think: 'I'm not smart enough for this'.
Â
These worries have meant that, when someone asks me 'what do you do?', I end up giving a vague response.
My coach asked me today:Â 'What's the biggest transformation you help your clients go through?'. And I said, 'I help people go from playing small, to playing all out'.
Â
Then she asked me: 'Does your usual elevator pitch reflect you playing all out?'
Ouch. That got me. Because no, it didn't. I was being avoidant, beating around the bush.
Â
The worst thing about this is that I wasn't just blocking my own path; I was also blocking the paths of the people who need my coaching! I let my own insecurities get in the way of connecting with people whose lives I can help improve. What a disservice...
Â
No more of that, please! So, I hereby proudly present to you my new elevator pitch:
Â
"I have a multidimensional career that reflects my out-of-the-box approach to life. As a researcher and expedition guide in the Arctic and Antarctica, I lead transformative experiences that help people reconnect with nature through mindful listening. I'm also a coach and consultant for gifted individuals, empowering them to break free from societal conformity, live more authentically, and unlock their full potential. I guide them to design an autonomous life fueled by their diverse passions, and catalyze them to play all out."
Â
Pretty neat, right? What would yours look like?
Key take-aways

- Mindset is a lifelong work in progress.
- Reflect on your own pitch: how do you explain to others what you do and why it matters? Can you spot any ways in which you are making yourself smaller than you are?
Â
On the horizonÂ
Â
I have coached hundreds of gifted people to help them improve their mindset. And there are clear patterns in the challenges we face. Which is why I am currently preparing a new offer, to help you tackle the most recurring mindset blocks that gifted people struggle with.
